The Ottoman Turks were prevented from overcoming Vienna by the cavalry of Jan Sobieski, the Polish King, who carried at the forefront of his cavalry the painting of Our Lady of Czestochowa. Because he entrusted his kingdom to the protection of the Virgin Mary, before the battle, Pope Innocent XI commemorated his victory by extending the feast of the Holy Name of Mary, to the universal Church. The year of the Battle of Vienna was 1683, the dates were September 11-September 12. The feast of the Holy Name of Mary is celebrated on September 12.
